BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Argentine President Cristina Fernandez will be operated on for carcinoma in the area of the thyroid gland next month, a government spokesman said on Tuesday.
The carcinoma has not metastasized, the spokesman said at a news conference.
"That means the carcinoma has not spread," a U.S.-based cancer expert said. "If that is the case and if they can take the gland out, the prognosis should be good."
The operation is scheduled to take place on January 4.
