Keep Warm From the Inside Out


If the winter winds are making you shiver, here are some tips for keeping warm and getting your circulation going.

Increased Energy with a Warm Abdomen

Chinese medicine considers the abdomen the storehouse of the body's energy. It is believed that keeping your abdomen warm and protected has important health and longevity benefits. To defend your energy bank, you must protect your abdomen from weather extremes. You can do this by keeping your midsection warm and covered. Some other potential energy robbers to watch out for are poor dietary habits, sexual excesses, insufficient sleep, and exhausting physical labor. 

A good way to replenish your energy bank is to regularly place a hot water bottle on your abdomen.  Also beneficial is applying abdominal wraps soaked in rejuvenating herbal solutions, or pouches containing similar herbs.

Let the Spices Flow

When you eat spicy food, you may get red in the face, experience a rise in your body temperature, and begin to perspire. These are all signs that your blood vessels are dilated and blood flow is accelerated. Garlic, onions, cayenne, turmeric, and many other spices have been clinically shown to improve circulation and prevent blood clots. So add spices to keep you healthy and get the blood flowing.

Zesty Halibut in Soy-Ginger Dressing

Here you've got a tasty recipe that is low in fat, heart-healthy and good for your circulation.

Serves: 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 2-lb halibut fillet
  • 1 green bell pepper, julienned
  • 1 red bell pepper, julienned
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, julienned (or red, if not available)
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp grated peeled fresh ginger
  • 2 tsp soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • 2 scallions (dark green part only), chopped, for garnish

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. Rinse fish and pat dry. Place in a baking dish and top with bell peppers, onion, ginger and soy sauce.  Drizzle orange juice over fish and sprinkle with zest; cover with foil, sealing edges.  Bake 15 minutes.
  3. Transfer to a serving platter, pour juices from baking dish over top and garnish with scallion, if desired.
